You mentioned "parsley, sage, rosemary, and time" by Jane Louise curry, which by weird synchronicity I am reading, and, yes, it is a lone girl (named Rosemary) spending the summer with her aunt in an old house in Maine, with an old overgrown herb garden, and a magic sundial (shaped like a sun's face) that has been hidden for many years by ivy. The sundial magic works only on midsummer eve, and she has to figure out that the key herb is thyme (time!). She is temporarily transported back in time to colonial Maine.
